Weekend in Barcelona: A Simple Guide

Weekend in Barcelona: A Simple Guide

Barcelona is made for a long weekend: Gaudí's buildings, a city beach, late dinners and neighbourhoods that are best explored on foot. Here is a simple plan for two or three days – and how to pack for it with just a cabin bag.

Day 1: Gothic Quarter and the waterfront

Start with the narrow streets of the Barri Gòtic and the cathedral, then wander through El Born. Head down to Barceloneta for an early evening walk along the beach and a seafood dinner.

Day 2: Gaudí day

Book the Sagrada Família and Park Güell online in advance – timed tickets often sell out, especially at weekends. In between, walk the Passeig de Gràcia to see Casa Batlló and Casa Milà from the outside.

Day 3: Montjuïc or a market morning

Take the cable car up Montjuïc for city views, or graze your way around La Boqueria market early, before the crowds arrive.

Local tips

  • Barcelona eats late – lunch around 2pm and dinner from 9pm is normal.
  • Pickpocketing is common in busy areas and on the metro. A crossbody bag that zips closed, worn in front, is a smart choice.
  • Comfortable shoes matter more than outfits – you'll walk a lot.

Packing for a Barcelona weekend

  • An under-seat bag or cabin backpack that fits your airline's free allowance
  • Packing cubes to keep outfits organised
  • A UK to EU plug adapter (Spain uses type C/F sockets)
  • A reusable water bottle and sunglasses, even in spring and autumn
  • A compact wash bag with 100 ml bottles for airport security

Not sure what fits under the seat? Check our cabin bag sizes by airline, then shop the city break essentials.
