How to pack a carry-on for a 7-day trip (without sitting on it)
Share
Carry-on packing is part Tetris, part minimalism. Here is a simple 7-step system that works for most people going away for a week.
Step one: lay everything you think you need on the bed. Step two: take half of it back to the wardrobe. Step three: roll, don't fold (it usually saves space). Step four: shoes go at the bottom, soles facing the wheels. Step five: pack a small day bag flat against the back of the case. Step six: liquids in one clear pouch, on top, easy to remove for security. Step seven: leave 10% of space for souvenirs.
The rule of thumb: if you're zipping with effort, you've packed too much. A well-packed carry-on closes naturally.
Pro tip from frequent flyers: pack one outfit and toiletries in your personal item. If your carry-on gets gate-checked, you're still covered for 24 hours.
